Understanding FUT Hair Transplant Procedure

In FUT procedures, the doctor surgically removes a thin strip of hair from the back of the head near the neck base. This strip is divided into grafts, and the hair follicles are then relocated to the top and front of the head. The doctor performs this removal process. It’s worth noting that hair at the back of the head is resistant to a chemical called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which prevents it from falling out. Hence, it’s common for men to have a ring of hair at the back and sides of the head.

Hair Transplant Procedures Details and Surgical Technique

After applying a local anesthetic, the doctor begins the hair transplant surgery by removing a small strip of hair. This strip comes from the back of the head, which is known as the “donor” area in hair transplantation. The doctor then instructs the surgical team on dividing grafts into small follicular units or hair group grafts. These units function like organs, having their own blood supply and being chemically regulated like other parts of the body.

Next, the doctor creates small slits in the area where the grafts will be transplanted, following the natural hair growth pattern. This step requires both artistic and technical precision to ensure proper placement and natural-looking results. The doctor carefully considers depth, angle, direction, size, and width while placing each graft. This meticulous approach helps promote healthy growth and seamless blending with existing hair.

Post-Surgery Care and Expectations

After the surgery, patients can quickly return to normal activities. It’s advisable to rest on the day of the procedure. Over the following days, patients can gradually resume work and leisure activities. Avoid strenuous activities to prevent damaging the grafts. Hair can be gently washed with mild shampoo, and within a few days, redness will subside, and the grafts will blend with existing hair.

Understanding Hair Growth and Expectations

Following the surgery, hair follicles enter a dormant phase called “shedding”. This will last about 3 to 6 months before new hair growth begins. Hair grows in cycles, starting within 2 to 4 months and gradually increasing over time. Full results may take 12 to 24 months to become apparent, with ongoing hair maturation. Surgical healing is relatively quick, with donor sites typically healing within 1 to 2 weeks. However, it may take several months for the hair to regain full strength.
